DAY 1

Driving In

Arrive in Quebec City in the early-afternoon.  If you’re driving from New York, or New England, and arriving via Autoroute 20, the South Shore Route, be sure to take the ferry into the city from the South Shore community of Levis.   When you arrive at the exit for Autoroute 73 and the Pierre Laporte Bridge, the standard route into Quebec, continue straight ahead on Autoroute 20 to the rue du President Kennedy exit to Levis.

The GPS coordinates are 5995 Rue Saint-Laurent, Lévis, QC, and the route is well marked.

If Flying In

If you are flying you can take an uber but airport cabs have a fixed rate to downtown/old city. More info here ➡️

Taxis and Limousine | Aéroport international Jean-Lesage de Québec (YQB)

Arrive in Quebec City in style

From Levis, take the ferry (a 15-minute ride across the St. Lawrence River, departing every 30 minutes) to the Quebec City Ferry Terminal at the base of Cap Diamant and the Chateau Frontenac.  You’ll have plenty of time to take the kids to the upper-level decks for a very memorable view of the City as it looms larger and larger on the horizon as you cross the river. ****

Where to Park

Parking your car is recommended once you get to the old city. Walking is the easiest way to explore upper and lower town. The most central parking is underground under city hall. It is across the Clarendon hotel.

Parking Recommendation

2, Rue Des Jardins parking - free or cheap lots, garages and street meter spots

Unless your kids are in elementary school, we also recommend that you begin your visit with a stop at the Musée du Fort, just steps from the Clarendon and the Chateau Frontenac, for its multi-media history lesson about the historic Battle of the Plains of Abraham.  This 30-minute presentation will orient you geographically, and acquaint you and the kids with Quebec City’s place in history.

After the sound and light show, and a stroll on the boardwalk and through the Upper City (Haute Ville), take the kids to dinner at the Chic Shack (in the lower level of the Musée du Fort).  If you’re not acquainted with the French Canadian delicacy known as poutine (yes, it was invented in Quebec before it migrated around the world), burgers and poutine and milkshakes are the house specialties here.
